Periodontal Disease & Treatment

Periodontal disease is an infection that affects the tissues and structures around the teeth. In the early stages, it’s called gingivitis. You may have heard the term “gingivitis” on toothpaste or toothbrush commercials. It is an infection of the gums that causes swelling and bleeding and, if not addressed, will progress to periodontal disease. At Horizon One Dental, we encourage you to brush and floss appropriately and keep your routine preventive appointments at our office to keep gum disease at bay.

Gum disease has been linked to heart disease, stroke, diabetes, respiratory problems, and more. Dental plaque contains bacteria that cause gingivitis and periodontitis. Bleeding, swollen gums are just the start. Left untreated, tooth loss will likely occur.
